Laser Therapy for Toenail Fungus in Beverly Hills
Got fungus?
Over the last few years there has been a revolution in the treatment of Toenail Fungus. The advancement of lasers and their safety has given doctors a promising and safe way to treat stubborn fungal nail infections.
What is toenail fungus?
Toenail fungus (Onychomycosis) is a very common condition. It is an infection of the root of the nail with a fungus. As the fungus invades the root and begins to multiply, the root becomes damaged. From this unhealthy root grows an unhealthy nail.
What are the symptoms of toenail fungus?
The damaged nail can have several different appearances:
Yellow
Brittle
Thickened
Loosened
Ingrown
White Stripes
Raised
Crooked
Painful
Darkened
Flaky Debris
About the Laser:
Dr. Soomekh offers a safe and effective treatment using the FDA-cleared Astanza Revolution Laser. The laser uses a Q-switched Nd:YAG system. The Astanza Revolution is a passively Q-switched system that stands apart from the rest due to its uniquely reliable pulses. Most passively Q-switched lasers have irregular pulse durations, leading to uneven power between pulses. The Revolution features superior consistency between pulses, providing greater, more reliable power with each laser pulse. The Revolution’s exceptional pulse consistency allows for more effective treatments, better safety for the skin, and higher patient satisfaction. In addition, the specific pulse duration of the Revolution makes it the perfect tool for treating toenail fungus, which requires a longer pulse.
The Toenail Fungus Treatment Procedure:
The laser therapy is performed in our office in Beverly Hills. The patient rests comfortably in the treatment chair while the medical assistant will painlessly smooth the nail plate for better penetration of the laser.
The treatment consists of passing the laser beam over the affected nail plate and nail root several times in a grid-like pattern.
The intense pulses of laser energy are applied to the entire area of each infected toenail. The laser energy penetrates through the nail plate to heat up and kill the fungus hiding in the nail bed and root. During treatment, the fungus absorbs the color and the heat from the laser and dies.
The procedure typically lasts 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the number of nails needing treatment. There is virtually no pain for patients, although they may feel a slight warming sensation during the procedure.
Once the fungus is eliminated, the nail root and nail bed will take some time to recover and heal from the trauma infection had caused. This can take up to 6 months or more. Once the root and bed heal, a healthy nail can grow.
The Toenail Fungus Treatment Results:
It typically takes a single Astanza Revolution laser treatment to completely kill the fungal colony and restore nails to good health. Dr. Soomekh recommends 3 treatments over 3 months in order to give the best chance to kill the fungus and eradicate its return.
The laser pulses immediately kill the fungus, and the newly healthy nail is apparent when the old nail grows out, which takes a few months. Patients typically do not mind waiting to see the results, as they understand that laser treatment is now the best solution for toenail fungus.
Patient satisfaction after treatment with Laser therapy is high. Relief from toenail fungus affects not only the appearance of the nails, but also the confidence and happiness of the patient.
Laser therapy is a safe, effective, and easy way to treat stubborn toenail fungus in Beverly Hills.
